Our Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some of our frequently asked questions by our customers.

Sash windows are a great fit for the Glasgow area, as the weather there is famously turbulent and like as not to change at the drop of a hat. The robust materials are designed to withstand extreme elements, making them more than durable enough to take on anything the North has to throw at it. Tight seals in the frame prevent drafts and leaks and can stand against both wind and rain, which are very common in the area. There are also further options for glazing, which boost protection against the cold, increasing your comfort during even the most trying conditions.

No window is maintenance-free, but Sash Windows are amongst those that require the least. Windows can be cleaned with a simple sponge and soap-water solution. Ensure you at least attempt to look for minor damage issues, such as sticking sashes or worn seals, as they can be fixed easily early on. For wooden sash windows, a new coat of paint every few years can keep them looking fresh and well-preserved. Modern sash windows made of uPVC or similar materials require even less upkeep. In Glasgow, there are also plenty of professional services available for those instances where a more significant repair might be needed.

Yes, sash windows are great for noise reduction intrinsic to both their design and the glass itself (double or triple glazing). Sash windows are designed to create a tight seal within the frame when the window is closed. This blocks the paths by which sound travels into the home, giving it no entry through those gaps, and forcing them to travel through the glass. Of course, the seal blocks air from travelling too, meaning that this is also good to keep energy in the home. This makes them an excellent choice for homes in busy Glasgow neighbourhoods or near high-traffic areas.

Glasgow has a damp climate, and that leads to a lot of concerns when it comes to condensation and the health issues they bring. Sash windows’ construction allows them to circumvent this issue, though. Their design promotes proper ventilation, which helps keep condensation at bay. Plus, with a professional installation ensuring a perfect fit and excellent sealing, there’s little room for condensation to form.

Of course, the glass also contributes to how much condensation you receive. Glazing will increase the amount of barriers and the temperature levels of the glass, effectively making condensation impossible.

Several types of locks can be installed on sash windows. Here are a few of the common ones:

  • Sash fasteners: These are the primary lock for a sash window. They are robust enough to firmly hold the top and bottom sashes together when the window is closed, creating a deadlock that won’t budge. Some sash fasteners are even lockable with a key for added security.
  • Sash stops or sash jammers: These devices will prevent the window from being opened beyond a certain threshold. This is fantastic for those who want to let in some air but want to limit the opening of your window.
  • Dual-screw locks: The dual-screw locks offer high security by firmly attaching themselves to the two sashes, and connecting them. This makes the window highly resistant to brute-force openings.
  • Key-operated locks: These are a solid choice for extra security. They are placed on the rail called a “meeting rail”, and a bolt enters a keep within the other sash when turned. This, in turn, secures the window through a locking mechanism.

Locks are important as far as security is concerned but do not forget that the quality of the window is also worth much consideration. After all, an easily broken class means a wider opening. Reinforced, laminated or even double/triple-glazed glass requires a much harder, and louder, effort to breach.
