Do I Need Planning Permission For Solar Panels?

Solar panels are becoming increasingly popular in Scotland, last year being a record year for heat pump and solar panel installations.

This is down to them becoming more affordable and accessible as well as most of the time needing no planning permission to install.

So when do you need planning permission to install solar panels?

Read on to find out about planning permission and solar panels.

Do You Need Planning Permission?

In most cases you do not need planning permission to install solar panels in Scotland. This is because solar panels are listed as a permitted development and therefore typically don’t require planning permission beforehand.

This is the case for most domestic properties which makes it relatively easy to install solar panels.

Permitted development rights are essentially a government scheme that allows you to make changes to your home without requiring prior planning permission. This can include a range of  developments including extensions, garage conversions and solar installation.

However, there are some conditions you need to comply with including:

  • Your system cannot be higher than the highest point of the roof (excluding any chimney)
  • The system cannot protrude more than 0.2 meters beyond the plane of the roof slope
  • The system should be installed in a way that the effect on the external appearance of the building and the amenity of the area in minimal
  • When no longer needed, equipment should be removed as soon as reasonably practicable

When Do You Need Planning Permission for Solar Panels?

You may require planning permission for the installation of solar panels if your property is:

  • A listed building
  • A flat
  • Situated in a conservation area

If you own your own home and your property doesn’t apply to any of the ones listed above, then you do not need planning permission. If you are unsure on whether your property will require planning permission, then it is always best to check with your local planning authority beforehand.

Permission is not always granted for the properties above, but it can be in some cases. For example, if you live in a top floor flat you may be granted permission to install solar panels on the roof. If you stay in a middle floor or ground floor flat you likely won’t be permitted.

Can I Install Solar Panels if I Rent?

Yes! You may be able to install solar panels even if you are renting. Of course, you have to first ask permission from your landlord.

They may not be worth the investment if you are only renting short term. If you plan on renting long term, then they may be worthwhile.

Are Solar Panels Worth It?

Solar panels are worth it for the vast majority of homeowners. Despite what people may think, they are also incredibly effective in Scotland.

If you have a size of panel sufficient enough for your home’s electricity needs, then you can cut your reliance on the national grid for energy.

You can add a solar battery to your system to store excess electricity you panels have generated so it can be used it a later time.
