How to Maintain Your Double Glazed Windows

Double glazed windows are a great investment for homeowners due to their high insulating ability, noise reduction and increased security. They are also more often than not low maintenance.

Despite this, they still require maintenance every once in a while to make sure these benefits last as well as your windows for many years.

Double glazing can last between 20 and 35 years. Maintaining your windows will ensure they will last for as long as possible.

Read on to find out how to maintain your double glazed windows.

Regular Cleaning

The easiest maintenance your double glazed windows need is regular cleaning. There are two parts of the window that needs cleaning:

The Glass

Cleaning the glass of your double glazed windows is not only great to keep your windows in good condition but also to make them look great.

Both the inside and outside glass should be cleaned.

For the outside, you can hire a professional window cleaner to do the work for you if you don’t want to do it yourself. If you do want to do it, the windows can be washed using a mild cleaning detergent and warm water.

A cloth or squeegee can be used to clean the glass. Always dry afterwards with a clean, dry cloth to prevent water spots.

The same solution can also be used for the inside. Always make sure you are using a soft, non-abrasive cloth or a squeegee so you don’t scratch the glass.

Never pressure wash your double glazed windows. While it may seem like a quick and easy way to clean them, especially for those windows that are hard to reach, this can cause unnecessary damage. If you can’t do the job or not sure how to, always hire a professional.

The Frames

Don’t forget the frames when cleaning your windows. A clean frame can make all the difference to the look of your windows.

Dust and dirt can build up on the frames of your windows. It is important to make sure you are cleaning them to remove this.

For most frames, a simple wipe down with a gentle cloth and warm water should do the trick. Finish off by drying your frames with a non-abrasive cloth.

If there are still marks on your frames, look for a specialist cleaner for your specific frame type. Avoid using any harsh chemicals as this can damage your frames. Using harsh cleaning tools and products can cause damage to your frames.

Maintenance

While high-quality, modern window units require little maintenance and are built to last, issues can still arise.

Over time, moving parts within your window such as locks and opening mechanisms can start to stick. Applying a few drops of lubricant should fix this. Try to apply lubricant to your windows once a year to prevent them from sticking. If you have applied lubricant and the sticking persists, seek a professional.

Check seals and gaskets to maintain the insulation of your double glazed window units. Inspect the seals and gaskets for any gaps or cracks and replace any that are damaged as soon as possible to maintain the window’s efficiency.

Open your windows to tackle condensation. Condensation is a common problem with double glazing. If it appears on the inside it means your home is very humid. Opening your windows or using a humidifier can improve this.

Inspect and Monitor For Damage

You should inspect your windows often and monitor any damage that appears.

Inspect frames for any signs of warping, cracking or other damage.

While double glazing is extremely tough and difficult to break, chips and cracks can still happen. If you spot any chips or cracks in your double glazed window panes then repair them as soon as possible.

Severe damage may mean your double glazed window units may need to be replaced. You can learn the signs your windows may need replacing here.
